Choosing a Writing Style For a Client

The single most important thing that I feel is important for a freelance content writer is his or her writing style. What a freelancer should understand is that the content is for a buyer and his writing style must match the requirements of that particular buyer.

For example, if a client desires your tone to be friendly and informative you should be able to deliver in that tone, but if the requirement is of having a tone of imparting instructions then you should have it that way.

The basic requirement is of having versatility in your writing style. To be honest, no one is actually looking forward to read what you have to say, but everyone wants a freelance content writer to deliver content what the client desires his or her readers to read.

As a professional you should actually not worry about the results achieved from the content written by you until and unless your client asks for your advice. This in my opinion is not being unfair or dishonest to him but it should be taken as a part that the client should undertake. If the client leaves this aspect at your discretion then it becomes you responsibility to choose the correct writing style.

There are several different styles that you can choose from depending upon the type of content that you are writing. Here are a few of them.

Informative Content

When writing informative content you should use a friendly and easy to understand style preferably in a first person tone. The language should be kept keeping in mind the expected reader's caliber and the aim should be to pass on some knowledge to your reader.

Policy and Plans

When you are required to write a business plan or a company's policies your tone should be formal, business like and commanding. In case of a business plan it should be short, crisp and to the point, where as in case of a policy document it should be explanatory but the tone of command should be visible in the directives and orders.

Dissertations

When the project is of writing a dissertation or a thesis or a research paper for a publication, you will have to follow the pattern of that particular institution or publisher.

In most of the cases your client will tell you the requirement of the style required for the content but as a responsible professional it is your responsibility to fulfill the requirement of the client in the best possible way.
